Big cities have a strange way of making you feel both very connected and quite alone at the same time. That is exactly where Metro… in Dino steps in to capture that bittersweet turmoil that we all secretly identify to.
Anurag Basu, who is always trying new things, directed this movie. It’s not strictly a sequel, but it clearly has the same feel as his 2007 smash Life in a… Metro. If that movie made you feel like you were having a profound conversation with the city, Metro… In Dino is more like having coffee with an old friend and talking about love, heartbreak, confusion, and hope.
Meet the Modern Love Team
This time, Basu has a cast that seems like the best WhatsApp group: a little sloppy, totally relatable, and full of interesting people. Aditya Roy Kapur plays the quintessential modern guy: he doesn’t know how to feel but is charming enough to get away with it. But Sara Ali Khan isn’t afraid to call him out for being a “commitment-phobic man-child.” (Seriously, we all know at least one guy like that, right?)
Joining them are absolute powerhouses: Konkona Sen Sharma, Pankaj Tripathi, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Ali Fazal, Neena Gupta, and Anupam Kher. Each of these actors adds their own unique touch to this urban mix of stories. They are all dealing with different kinds of love, like young love, lost love, difficult love, and even the kind of love that catches you off guard.
A Life Story, Not Just a Love Story
What is it about Metro… What makes Dino click is how real it feels. It’s not the over-the-top Bollywood love story with violins playing in the background. It’s the uncomfortable pauses, the late-night texts, the times when you ponder too much, and the little, quiet wins when two people are finally able to be honest with one other.
The movie isn’t afraid to look at how love has changed in today’s fast-paced society, where swiping right could earn you a date but not a meaningful relationship. That is still as hard as ever.
A Soundtrack That Makes You Feel Like You’re Getting a Hug and then there’s the music. Pritam is back to do what he does best: write songs that stick in your head. The songs are new but remind you of old times. They’re modern but very emotive, the kind you hum long after the credits roll. There is even a bonus surprise: Aditya Roy Kapur himself sings one of the songs, which adds a nice personal touch.
Why This One Feels Different
At its heart, Metro… In Dino, the main character isn’t trying very hard to impress. It only shows us what our lives, cities, and imperfect attempts at love are like. There is something in here that will make you nod and smile, whether you’re 22 and swiping through dating apps or 45 and trying to make things work again.
As the movie gets ready to come out on July 4, it’s safe to say that Anurag Basu could have given us another delightfully chaotic, emotionally rich drama that reminds us that there is always room for love in the city, even when it’s loud.
